The open nature of Google’s Android mobile platform puts it well ahead of the game in terms of customisability. It is not only (partially) open source in that third-party developers’ ROMs can be used in place of the real thing, but it doesn’t impose the same restrictions as Apple or Microsoft when it comes to the way the platform is manipulated. Better yet, it doesn’t matter whether you’re a coder or not because the software does most of the work for you.
