Best value laptops for Christmas

Prices for small and large laptops alike have come down significantly and there are plenty of bargains to be had this holiday season

  • Lenovo is also offering a 15in laptop with a powerful configuration for well under $900. The ThinkPad Edge 525 costs [[xref:http://shopap.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/auweb/LenovoPortal/en_AU/catalog.workflow:item.detail?GroupID=173&Code=E525_ANZ_C3&category-id=FCA0E1E2FFB3A3C69691B9407F90108E|$849]] (Web site price) and it's based on an AMD A8-3500M APU, which has four CPU cores as well as a built-in AMD Radeon HD 6620G graphics processor. With 6GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive, you can't go wrong.

  • Lenovo is having a huge sale at the moment and there are many models that we wish to highlight in this slideshow. First up is the [[xref:http://shopap.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/auweb/LenovoPortal/en_AU/catalog.workflow:item.detail?GroupID=173&Code=E420_ANZ_HP4&category-id=A7C98E2DB7AFD2FE6E59585DF33F04D3|ThinkPad Edge E420]]. It's a 14in laptop with a 2.8GHz Intel Core i7 CPU and it only costs $949 (Web site pricing), which Lenovo claims is a saving over $1200! We think it's amazing value if you're looking for a notebook that can provide excellent mobility, speed and user comfort.

  • If you want a 15-incher with a little more power, then check out the [[artnid:407127|ASUS K53SC]]. It features an Intel Core i7 CPU (rather than the Core i5 that we reviewed it with), along with 4GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive. It costs only $897 from [[xref:http://www.thegoodguys.com.au/alexandria/Asus_K53SC_Core_i7_15.6IN_Notebook_K53SC-SX245V|The Good Guys]].

  • If you want something slightly larger, Dell's Inspiron 15R can be purchased for $499 from its [[xref:http://configure.ap.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=du510811au&c=au&l=en&s=dhs&cs=audhs1&model_id=inspiron-15r-n5110|Web site]]. It's a Core i3-based notebook that's perfect for everyday use.

  • The Toshiba Satellite Z830 is [[artnid:407997|our favourite Ultrabook]] to date and it has already come down in price since it was released last month. You can find it at [[xref:http://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers/toshiba/13-inch-ultrabook-sku-73702|JB Hi-Fi]] for $1098, and yes, that includes the 128GB solid state drive.
