Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep is set to hit local shores on 9 September, exactly eight months since the Japanese release. The new Kingdom Hearts story takes place around 10 years before the original game, looking into the individual stories of Sora’s (the main character of the first Kingdom Hearts) predecessors: Terra, Ven and Aqua. The three protagonists are Keyblade apprentices who go in search for a missing Keyblade Master through the Disney universe.

Along with the exploration of these new characters come new gameplay mechanics and a new way of moving through the story. Players control each of the three characters, whose journeys interlace for a new experience to Kingdom Hearts veterans.

Each character has their own unique combat style to keep the action fresh - couple that with a new levelling-up system and players have a whole lot of work on their hands, juggling three separate characters across the game.

Kingdom Hearts has followed Square Enix’s other titles like the Final Fantasy franchise in its evolution of the role-playing game formula with additions to enhance the gameplay. This time around there are no Magic Points for spells and magic casting, rather a Focus gauge is powered up for each move.

Spells are also cast differently, in a first person ‘shot lock' mode.

Another new addition to KH is the Command Board; a minigame that comes with each world, featuring perks or hindrances to characters. When the die is rolled, the player moves across the board onto different tiles which each have their own unique effect -– either good or bad. The Command Board offers a new angle to the levelling up process, with new ways of beefing up the player’s character or hampering them.

Command Styles are new in this game, where each character’s way of fighting can be upgraded mid-battle by filling up command gauges. Each time this happens, the character can reach higher levels and new command styles.

D-Link (no, not the router) is another perk to the franchise that lets players summon allies into battle. Once the D-Link gauge is filled, the other playable characters or Disney characters can be brought in via the Dimension Link, each with their own unique attacks and finishing moves.

If three years of development and the large-scale Japanese release is anything to go by, Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep may be an instant classic on release day later this year. The question now is: will you taste the apple?
