Step inside the haunting halls of Arkham Asylum, where Batman must do battle with his famous foes.
The game’s immersive storyline has been penned by Emmy Award-winning screenwriter Paul Dini. Deni’s previous credits include the TV show Lost, Batman: The Animated Series, Animaniacs and, er, Star Wars: Ewoks.
It would appear that stealth will play a large part in Batman: Arkham Asylum. According to the most recent press release, players will also have access to ‘detective skills’ (which probably involves collecting stuff).
It will be interesting to see how the Joker gets himself out of this situation. We’re betting he incites an asylum riot.
Like pretty much every other next-gen game under the sun, Batman: Arkham Asylum is being built on the Unreal 3 Engine. Therefore, expect the graphics to be on par with Gears of War, Mass Effect and Bioshock.
Batman appears curiously relaxed in this screenshot, despite the subhuman monstrosity looming above him. He’s either tough-as-nails, or extraordinarily near-sighted.
In addition to the Joker, many famous DC villains are set to make an appearance in the game, including the Penguin, Harley Quinn, the Riddler, Poison Ivy and Mr. Ice. No word on Two Face though.
Batman: Arkham Asylum is being developed by Rocksteady Studios (we always preferred Be-Bop) and is slated for release in 2009.
This screenshot gives an intriguing idea of what the combat in the game could be like — a traditional one-on-one beat 'em up, perhaps?
The game’s dark setting offers plenty of scope for nightmarish environments. This cell (which looks like it belongs to the Riddler) is reminiscent of the Saw movies, as well as the game F.E.A.R. This appears to be a grittier game than the usual comic-book fare.
The Batman in this game shares little resemblance to Christian Bale, the star of the current Batman movies. Instead, they’ve gone down the ‘grizzled beefcake’ route (see also Marcus Fenix from Gears of War).
Batman: Arkham Asylum is an over-the-shoulder action adventure game set inside Gotham City’s titular loony bin. As Batman, players must use weapons and wits to overcome a roster of DC Comic’s most fiendish villains. It’s up to you to stop them from breaking out of the prison and running amuck in Gotham City.
In addition to his fists, Batman will have access to an arsenal of ‘wonderful toys’ to dispatch enemies with, including the famous batarang. (Incidentally, the enemies above look like they came straight out of the game Manhunt.)
The game starts off with Batman escorting his arch-nemesis the Joker into Arkham Asylum for various crimes against humanity. Something tells us he won’t stay locked up for long though.
