A sneak peak at Sony’s latest executive notebook

Sony unveils its latest 13.1in notebook

  • The Z-series is also interesting when it comes to expansion ports, with a HDMI port, FireWire and D-Sub ports built-in. Only two USB 2.0 ports can be found on the laptop. Gigabit Ethernet and 802.11n wireless networking gives road warriors the current fastest options for network connectivity.

  • Featuring a 2.5GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P9500 CPU, 4GB of DDR3 RAM and a 320GB hard drive, the VGN-Z17GN doesn’t come cheaply. It will cost $3699 when it’s eventually released in September.

  • During a low-key function in Sydney, Sony unveiled its latest notebook — the Sony Vaio VGN-Z17GN. It's part of the Z-series and is aimed at office users who want something mobile to use while on the road.

  • The entire unit weighs in at 1.5kg, which makes it perfect for travelling with. Thanks to the speed of the components, users should have no problems creating content on the move.

  • The VGN-Z17GN has a 13.1in screen with a native resolution of 1600x900, as well as an NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS graphics adapter. At the flick of a switch, the unit can change from using the energy-burning GeForce adapter ('speed mode') to the Intel newest GMA 4500MHD integrated graphics ('stamina mode') in order to conserve the battery.

  • Unfortunately there’s already at least one disappointment. The high cost of the unit doesn’t cover a Blu-ray drive, even though the HDMI port means this unit can easily connect to LCD and plasma screens. Those who purchase the Z17GN from Sony have been promised a Sony Ericsson W910i mobile phone as a deal sweetener.
