According to Internet rumour, the new game will incorporate bucket-loads of mature content, including dismemberments, gory finishing moves and even nudity. No doubt this decision was prompted by the success of similarly-themed games, such as God of War.
One of the key gimmicks in the original Golden Axe was the ability to ride a variety of scaly four-legged beasts. If its name is anything to go by, Golden Axe: Beast Riders will place a stronger emphasis on mounting and controlling steeds.
Pitching your beast against similarly mounted foes is bound to be lots of fun – provided that Sega gets the controls right.
Naturally, traditional hack-and-slash action will also make up a large portion of the game. Hopefully, we’ll see a return of the ‘spinny-backwards’ attack, which dispatches enemies creeping up behind you.
We feel compelled to point out that a bikini isn’t a particularly sensible outfit for somebody who frequently engages in sword fights. (Perhaps she plans to distract enemies with her unfeasibly toned belly.)
Is it just us, or are some of these beasts a bit goofy looking?
At the time of writing, the only ‘classic’ character confirmed for the sequel is Tyris Flare; the impractically armoured amazon babe with a penchant for fire and dragons. Other playable characters to have graced the Golden Axe series include Gillius Thunderhead (a dwarf), Axe-Battler (a shirtless Conan wannabe), Goah the Giant (a, um, giant), and Dora (a female centaur).
If Golden Axe: Beast Riders manages to capture even half of its ancestor’s sense of fun, it will surely be a next-gen classic. Fingers crossed, eh?
