Mario Kart Wii in action!

  • Or Luigi for that matter.

  • Ever the salesmen, Mario and Luigi shamelessly pimp their new peripheral to the kids. (We don’t know how they can live with themselves.) Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice-president of Sales & Marketing adds; "Driving with the Wii Wheel could not be more natural, and this is one place where speeding is encouraged!"

  • A vast selection of racing tracks has been assembled for Mario and chums to zip around on; including plenty of riffs on all your old favourites. There will be 32 tracks in all; 16 classic courses and 16 new courses. For mayhem addicts, 10 battle arenas are also included on the game map.

  • Gamers, start your engines: the world’s most beloved multiplayer racer is finally set to rev its way onto the Nintendo Wii. With more vehicles, characters, weapons and tracks than ever before; not to mention an official racing wheel, Mario Kart Wii might just be the best addition to the franchise. For all the latest info, steer your way through this comprehensive slideshow.

  • For the first time ever, each character in the Mario Kart universe will have a choice between driving karts or motorbikes. In addition to injecting the game with new strategic possibilities, it also gives Princess Peach an excuse to wear a fetching lycra jumpsuit. She’s such a show-off.

  • A Nintendo slideshow wouldn’t be complete without some obligatory Mario character art.

  • In addition to the usual cast of colourful misfits, Mario Kart Wii allows you to upload your ‘Mii’ avatar into the game for a personalised (if somewhat Lego-like) touch.

  • We’re not sure what’s going on here, but it looks pretty fun.

  • Like most Wii games, Mario Kart Wii utilises motion-sensitive controls, which should make it one of the most immersive Mario Kart titles yet. The game will come packaged with its own Wii steering wheel; an add-on peripheral that the motion-sensitive Wii-mote slots into.

  • This scene looks a little too idyllic for a racing game (something that a well placed homing missile will be sure to remedy)

  • In this screenshot, Princess Peach attempts to outmanoeuvre a giant ape (Diddy or Donkey?) driving a tricked-out Formula One car. As you do.

  • A Mii. All together now: Awwwwwww!

  • Here’s what the back of the steering wheel looks like – note the larger B button and handy wrist strap slot. Although the wheel is bound to add fun to the game, it will remain entirely optional; allowing friends to join the fun with normal Wii remotes.
