Setup

Once plugged in, this new improved Ultra drive does come into its own with a well thought-out user-friendly interface for syncing your cloud service accounts and social media content to be stored. The WD Discovery software can be installed instantly, and it will intuitive ask the user to sign into services such as Dropbox, Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive (these accounts will ask you to verify the login). Once signed in, it locates the files and allows the user to import content that are stored on those platforms onto the drive. This is the same with photos and other content from Instagram or Facebook, where you can download your digital footprint onto the drive. The steps are so simple and intuitive that there should be no hesitation even for those who are not technically minded.

The explosion of public cloud services over the last few years have meant that there is increasingly more data that needs to be sort through especially if like most people, given any single week would take upwards of 10 photos. Considering there are more than 2.1 billion active Facebook users every month (Source: Facebook 26/07/2017) and with around 300 million photos uploaded every day, these figures indicate an alarming increase of personal data on the cloud, and a need to take control back on some of this personal data and content out there. And if this means that important photos of our digital selves can be stored on a portable device, then it is a good option to have on hand, especially for accessibility and archiving purposes.

Glenn Hower, Senior Analyst, Parks Associates puts it very well, “As the connected consumer has become more mobile, content is now scattered across multiple devices, cloud services and social media. The fundamental problem for consumers is that they may not remember what content is stored on what account. Device makers and service providers are positioned to provide a better way to integrate and improve the connected consumer experience.”

Conclusion

It really is about offering a one-stop storage solution to the generation of millennials who’s many life experiences is through the digital medium, and they genuinely care about what they share, whether it’s because they want more followers on their Instagram accounts, get in touch with friends they haven’t seen for a while or to relive a moment with their friends. This new software interface makes cataloguing these precious moments so much easier.

The My Passport Ultra Drive comes in 1TB, 2TB and 4TB with a 3 year limited warranty.
