Would you buy this?

SanDisk’s Ultra Dual USB Drive is a USB drive with two connectors. On one side there is a micro-USB head for Android phones and tablets. On the other is a USB 2.0 connector for computers. The purpose of dual-head connections is for easy file transfers between your PC or Mac and your Android device.

You simply plug the USB drive into your computer, or directly into your Android device. The SanDisk Ultra Dual USB Drive is compatible with android devices that have OTG support (USB on-the-go). A list of compatible devices can be found on SanDisk’s Web site.

There is no external power source or need for any cables. The only thing needed is the USB drive itself, which is very convenient. Physically, the USB drive looks very simple and sleek. It’s all back with the SanDisk logo highlighted in red text. It is very small, measuring about 20mm in width and 11mm in height.

To access the connectors, there is a sliding cover mechanism. You slide the plastic covering to reveal the connector. It’s sturdy, and the construction doesn't feel flimsy. We like this design because there are no external caps as these can get fiddly and are easily lost. There is a small lanyard hole on the top of the drive. A minor issue is that you may have to take off your Android device’s case if it’s thick in order to connect the micro-USB connector into your device.

To make file organisation easy, SanDisk has an app available in the Google Play store called SanDisk Memory Zone App. This app is essentially a very polished file manager application. You can also use this app for backing up your files. This app is useful for freeing up internal storage on your Android device. The app also has the ability for you to schedule backups. The app works with cloud services such as, Dropbox, Google Drive, Box, SugarSync, and OneDrive. This allows you to sync your phone’s or tablet’s memory to these services. You can even add a password to protect your files.

In our tests, the USB Drive was immediately recognised, and the drive was scanned for files which then showed up in the app. The app itself is very nice to look at and the interface is very easy to use. Your files are sorted into categories: music, photos, videos, documents, and apps. You press and hold onto a file to bring up more options, such as copying, uploading to online storage, renaming, deleting, making it private, and even sharing to Facebook.

We tested the backup feature by backing up our music files which were 0.94GB in size. It took 3min 40sec, at 4.4 megabytes per second (MBps) on average. When the stick is plugged into your PC, the backed-up files will show up in the stick’s Memory Zone folder. We then copied these backed-up files from the stick to our PC. It was very quick, taking only 16sec at an average of 60.2MBps. However when copying the same files from the PC to the USB Drive, it took 1min 45sec (at an average of 9.2MBps).

There were no issues playing videos or music from the USB drive on an Android device. When playing a video, the Memory Zone app launches a video player app of your choosing.

When you are done using the USB stick, simply slide down the notification drawer and click on the USB drive in the tray and it will disconnect safely. One complaint we have is that the USB drive is 2.0; it could’ve been faster for PC file transfers if it was equipped with USB 3.0.

SanDisk’s Ultra Dual USB Drive is a great option for easy file transfers and backups for your Android device. There are no cables to fiddle with, and the device is very compact, which is useful when you are on the go.

We're impressed with SanDisk’s downloadable app, Memory Zone. This app has a sleek interface which allows you to password-protect your content, as well as sync your memory with cloud storage options.

The Sandisk Ultra Dual USB Drive is priced at $50 to $100 for 16GB to 64GB capacities.
