  • Easy Key
  • Camera is feature rich and decent for the price

  • Performance often drags
  • Mediocre battery life

Bottom Line

The Y5 is Huawei’s cheapest smartphone of the year, and it’s got the look, feel and performance to match that mantle.

Would you buy this?

  • Price

    $ 199.00 (AUD)

With only an 8-megapixel sensor, the Y5’s main camera delivers that are maybe not as muddy as you’d expect but still probably nothing worth writing home about. As usual, switching things over to HDR mode gives everything a little more color and detail.

Close-ups look a little less muddy but sometimes there’s a little too much light and images come across a little flooded. Again, passable for the most part, but hard to get excited about.

The one silver-lining here is the All Focus Mode. Similar to the Post-Focus feature found in Huawei’s flagship devices, this lets you take images and then set the focal point after the fact. This feature remains a great inclusion, even if it’s potential comes constrained by the low megapixel count in the Y5’s cameras.

In terms of video, the Y5 can shoot in up to 1080p Full HD quality. However, the results are a little scratchy at times. It’ll suit for the odd-Snapchat but probably won’t cut it for anything you’re serious about actually documenting via video.
