No midnight iPad launch for Optus, but new plans announced

Optus has announced a set of new data plans for Apple's new iPad, which goes on sale in Australia tomorrow, but it won't be holding a midnight launch for the popular tablet device.
Unlike Vodafone's new iPad plans, Optus is only offering the tablet on 24 month contracts, with no shorter 12 month contracts available. Optus's plans start at $38 per month for the entry-level 16GB iPad model over 24 months.
"The Optus Open Network, in conjunction with our commitment to superior customer service, represents a great platform for Australians to experience more with the new iPad," said Gavin Williams, consumer marketing director, Optus. "The popularity of tablets in Australia is rapidly rising and Optus is excited to offer our customers a number of great value plans for the new iPad."
Optus' cheapest plan on the 16GB iPad will set you back $38 per month for 500MB of data, which totals $912 over 24 months. There are no upfront costs on any of the new plans: the same entry-level plan paired with the 32GB iPad will cost $41 per month, while it will set you back $45 per month with the largest 64GB model.
In addition to the entry-level 500MB monthly plan, Optus will offer 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB and 16GB plans, varying in cost depending on the iPad model selected.
The new iPad will be available through selected Optus stores Australia wide from tomorrow. Optus says the stores will be trading in "regular hours", so unlike Telstra it will not be holding a midnight launch. However, Optus customers can order the new iPad online at 12.01am tomorrow through the dedicated new iPad Web page.
