Atari announces release date for Ghostbusters: The Video Game

Gamers set to get slimed on 19 June.

Atari today announced an official release date for its eagerly anticipated Ghostbusters video game, which has been in development limbo since its original announcement over two years ago. The game will hit North American retail shelves on 16 June, with the rest of the world following suit on 19 June. The release date coincides with the original motion picture's 25th anniversary as well as its release on Blu-ray disc by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

Ghostbusters: The Video Game tells an all-new adventure set in the Ghostbusters universe, with the original cast returning to lend their voices to the characters. The game's story was also penned by original creators Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd. The player takes on the role of a new recruit and must battle ghosts alongside the original team.

For Ghostbusters fans, the news of an official release date will no doubt come as a relief. The game has been plagued with development problems from the very beginning. After original developer ZootFly lost rights to the game due to copyright issues, the project was restarted by Activision, only to be put on indefinite hiatus in July 2008. The unfinished project was then picked up by Atari.

Ghostbusters: The Video Game will be available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS and PC. Click here to check out a slide show of the game in action.
