Intel pull plug on Vaunt AR smartglasses

Intel has pulled the plug on its Vaunt AR smartglasses less than two months after revealing them.

As originally reported by The Information, unnamed sources say Intel have made the decision to shutter their New Devices Group. This division of the company was aimed at helping Intel break into the wearables space through categories like fitness trackers and smartglasses.

Intel first revealed the Vaunt (internally called 'Superlight') back in February, showing it off to tech journalists in the States. At that time, Intel were positioning the device's retinal laser projector as a non-intrusive way forward for the smartglasses category after the backlash faced by products like Google Glass.

Intel confirmed the story to Engadget in a statement, saying "Intel is continuously working on new technologies and experiences. Not all of these develop into a product we choose to take to market. The Superlight project is a great example where Intel developed truly differentiated, consumer augmented reality glasses."

According to the company, "we are going to take a disciplined approach as we keep inventing and exploring new technologies, which will sometimes require tough choices when market dynamics don't support further investment."
