Google lets Android users search in their apps

With In Apps search mode, users can find songs, contacts and messages

Don’t you hate it when you can’t find that piece of info you know is buried in one of your apps?

If you’re an Android user, Google is going to help you with that.

The company announced Wednesday the launch of Apps, a new search mode designed to enable users to search for information in the apps on their Android phones.

“We use apps to call friends, send messages or listen to music. But sometimes, it’s hard to find exactly what you’re looking for,” Timo Mertens, a Google product manager, wrote in a blog post. “Now searching your personal results happens entirely on your phone, so you can search even when you're not connected to WiFi or cellular data. Only you can see your personal results, and you can control what apps appear by going to Settings within the Google app.”

To access the search feature, go to the Google app on an Android phone and click on the In Apps tab.

The app is designed to help users find contacts, music and messages within certain apps.

The app, for instance, can help a user find a message where her friend told her about a new sushi restaurant by simply searching for sushi. Need to find your grocery list? Just search for groceries.

However, when the upcoming LG V20 phone arrives, its users will be able to access the In Apps search mode directly with a shortcut on the home screen and on the second screen.

Google noted that In Apps works with apps including Gmail, Spotify and YouTube. In the coming months, the company expects to add more, such as Facebook Messenger, LinkedIn, Evernote, Glide, Todoist and Google Keep, to that list.
