HP's unique Elite X2 tablet can be repaired at home

Users can pop open the rear to add memory or change the screen, battery or hard drive

HP's unique Elite X2 1012 tablet has a unique quality not found in similar devices today: It can be repaired at home.

The rear of the tablet can be unscrewed to replace the screen, hard drive or storage, or add memory.

That saves users time and effort as the tablet doesn't need to be sent away for repairs. Unlike with PCs, device makers usually just replace tablets as the small size makes them difficult and expensive to repair.

The replacement peripherals need to be ordered from HP. Depending on the warranty, users may be able to get the peripherals at no cost. Some things like motherboard damage can't be repaired at home, and the tablet needs to be sent back to HP.

The Elite X2 will start shipping in January for US$899 with 128GB of storage, 4GB of memory, a full high-definition screen, 802.11ac, a detachable travel keyboard and Wacom digital pen. The tablet can be upgraded to 512GB of storage and 8GB of memory.

The device is 8.05 millimeters thick and offers 10 hours of battery life. The specifications include a Core M processor based on Skylake architecture. An interesting feature is the USB-C port, which supports the Thunderbolt 3 protocol. It also has a SIM slot for mobile broadband.

For system administrators, the device can be remotely tracked and locked down in case of theft. The health of storage, memory and the OS can be remotely checked.

As the Maserati or BMW of laptops, it would fit perfectly in the hands of a professional needing firepower under the hood, sophistication and class on the surface, and gaming prowess (sports mode if you will) in between.
