Woolworths Connect versus AldiMobile: How do they compare?

Voice and data plans summarised in one article

Supermarket giants Woolworths and Aldi are going head-to-head in the mobile space. Both offer prepaid voice and data plans; both resell Telstra’s 3G network; and both are after the same segment of customers.

Voice: How they compare

Aldi Mobile offers a wider range of voice plans ranging from $10 to $45. Two of its plans are comparable to those offered by Woolworths Connect.

What $30 gets you

The $30 recharge from Woolworths Connect appears to be of better value than that offered by AldiMobile. Woolies is offering $650 of credit to be used on national voice calls at 90 cents per minute. AldiMobile is offering $65 of credit at 10 cents per minute, though if it had the same 90 cent call rate as Woolies, its credit would work out to be $585.

There are unknowns that could influence this result, such as the cost of flagfall (connection fee), which has yet to be disclosed by Woolworths.

There is no limit on national text messages on Woolworths’ $30 recharge. AldiMobile limits local SMS messages to a reasonable 50,000 per month.

The two tie on data allowance with each one offering 1.5GB of data per month.

What $45 gets you

Woolworths Connect’s $45 plan comes with $1500 of call value charged at 90 cents per minute. This equates to 1,667 minutes of voice calls — assuming there is no charge for flag fall. The same plan on AldiMobile comes with a high national call allowance of 43,200 minutes.

AldiMoble also nudges ahead on data valua. Whereas Woolworths Connect’s plan comes with 3.5GB, AldiMobile will offer an additional 500MB with an allowance of 4GB per month.

Woolworths Connect redeems itself by uncapping SMS messages. AldiMobile’s plan includes a reasonable 50,000 SMS and 20,000 MMS messages.

Data: How they compare

Woolworths Connect is offering three data plans; two of which are similarly priced to those from AldiMobile.

Woolworths is offering 1.25GB for $14.90. This is fractionally less than the $16.50 plan from AldiMobile, although that offers a little more data at 1.5GB.

Little seperates the next plan. Woolworths is charging $29.90 for 3GB, whereas AldiMobile is charging a flat $30 for the same allowance.

Higher users will gravitate to Woolworths Connect’s 10GB plan which costs $99.90.

Both carriers offer these plans over a 30 day period.

Network details

Woolworths Connect and AldiMobile are resellers of Telstra's 3G network. Woolworths has confirmed it uses the 850MHz and 2100MHz bands for a theoretical maximum download speed of 7.2Mbps. In reality, representatives claim the download speed will range from 550Kbps to 3Mbps.

AldiMobile has not confirmed which bands it uses. The company has shared it covers 98.5 per cent of the Australian population, with a theoretical maximum download speed of 7.2Mbps.
