Ambitious LG has Samsung firmly in its sights with G4 flagship

Sweeping changes made to its next-generation flagship

Ambitious LG is aiming to follow the success of last year’s G3 with its 2015 flagship, the G4. Improvements have been made across the board to the display, the two cameras, the processor and the design.

Front on LG’s flagship resembles its second generation G Flex 2. Its facade is black and the screen even curves subtly. Differences are most noticeable with the smartphone’s back, which is finished in either genuine leather or pure ceramic.

Last year’s LG G3 was the first smartphone with a 1440p display when it was released in Australia. Introducing the technology early meant LG had to compromise on the screen’s brightness in an effort to prolong the smartphone’s battery life.

A year on and the company claims its 5.5-inch, 1440p display is brighter and has improved its colour production. It responds more accurately to gestures and handles sunlight better as the touch sensors have been integrated right into the LCD panel.

LG is targeting Samsung with the improvements made to its cameras. The rear camera is the same resolution as that featured on Samsung’s Galaxy S6 range at 16 megapixels and it too packs optical image stabilisation. Its point of difference is an aperture of f/1.8 and that is superior to the f/1.9 aperture of Samsung's flagships.

Further differentiating the camera of the G4 is its laser guided autofocus. The technology measures multiple points of focus using an infrared laser in order to take quicker photos. It works in a similar fashion to the radar guns used by police officers and was a hit feature in the previous generation G3.

Benefitting from a big upgrade is the front camera. The former 2 megapixel camera has been replaced with one that can capture photos 8 megapixels large.

Inside is a hexa-core Snapdragon 808 processor that alternates between a dual-core 1.8GHz CPU and a quad-core 1.44GHz CPU, along with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal eMMC storage. Unlike its Galaxy S6 rivals, the G4 supports microSD memory cards and has an interchangeable 3000 milliamp-hour battery.

LG has not yet confirmed the pricing and availability of its G4 smartphone in Australia. Good Gear Guide will post updates as more news breaks.
