As HP reports numbers, questions will be on its split

Hewlett-Packard is due to report its first-quarter results on Tuesday afternoon, but analysts will be more interested in hearing updates from CEO Meg Whitman on plans for the company's split into two, says re/code. The company's earnings are expected to hit $27.4 billion.

GOPers on FCC want to delay net neutrality vote

The two Republican members of the Federal Communications Commission want to put a last-minute roadblock in the way of a proposal to reclassify the Internet as a utility and put stronger net neutrality protections in place. In a move that's unlikely to succeed, Commissioners Ajit Pai and Mike O'Rielly want to delay the vote scheduled for Thursday, and have the FCC open the 332-page proposal to the public for comment. An agency spokeswoman said that the FCC already has already gotten "unprecedented levels of public comment on a variety of options" for net neutrality rules.

Google deal for Softcard puts its Wallet on multiple carriers' phones

Google has struck a deal with mobile carriers to acquire technology from Softcard, a competing mobile wallet app developed jointly by Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile. The result is that the carriers will start preinstalling Google Wallet on new Android smartphones later this year -- something they wouldn't do before, in preference for the Softcard app.

Belgium doesn't like Facebook's privacy policy

An investigation done for Belgium's privacy commission says that Facebook's latest policy violates European consumer protection law, the Guardian reports. The new policy, put in place last month, doesn't obtain legally valid consent in some areas, according to the study, which also found other practices problematic.

Symantec survey: Bad faith leads to bad data

What happens when people lose faith in businesses not to violate their privacy? Growing numbers of them provide bad data in online signups, according to a Symantec survey of European users reported on by the Wall Street Journal.

Do-it-yourself IoT kit from ARM, IBM aims to link more devices to the cloud

Hobbyists aren't IBM's usual target but the company has teamed up with ARM to offer a kit that will let DIYers make their own connected devices for the Internet of Things. The ARM mbed IoT Starter Kit will come with ARM's mbed OS and connect into IBM's BlueMix cloud, and is aimed at those with little to no experience in embedded or Web development.

Wall Street, law firms plan joint cyber defenses

The latest casualty of well-organized cybercriminals appears to be the tradition of secrecy among their victims. Wall Street banks and their law firms are talking about setting up a group to share information about IT security, the New York Times reports. Apparently the law firms are involved because hackers have learned they are a rich source of information about their clients.

HP OfficeJet Pro 8730

I've had a multifunction printer in the office going on 10 years now. It was a neat bit of kit back in the day -- print, copy, scan, fax -- when printing over WiFi felt a bit like magic. It’s seen better days though and an upgrade’s well overdue. This HP OfficeJet Pro 8730 looks like it ticks all the same boxes: print, copy, scan, and fax. (Really? Does anyone fax anything any more? I guess it's good to know the facility’s there, just in case.) Printing over WiFi is more-or- less standard these days.
