One application working across a smartphone, tablet and PC, that’s the key behind Microsoft’s smartphone strategy in the lead up to its next-generation platform, Windows 10.
Microsoft will leverage its strength in the PC market to fuel the development of apps for its smartphones and tablets. The strategy will increase Microsoft’s competitiveness as it stops trailing rivals and starts to innovate, claims Steve Lewis, Microsoft Device’s Australian managing director.
“When you look at windows 10, I would say we have a chance to move ahead in a number of areas, rather than being in catch up mode,” said Lewis.
“The idea of one universal operating system running across all devices is something you don’t see elsewhere. That’s a step ahead.”
Having every device in Microsoft’s ecosystem running Windows 10 makes it possible for developers to program one application that will work on smartphones, tablets and PCs.
“The most exciting news is the move towards more universal apps with Windows 10.
“The majority of the work is done once [by developers] and it can then be reformatted to different screen sizes and orientations,” Lewis told Good Gear Guide.
Microsoft’s application store has 560,000 applications. “Now it’s more about having the right apps and good quality apps,” said Lewis.
The first step in bringing Microsoft’s frayed smartphone platform closer to its computing ecosystem commences today with the roll out of Lumia Denim.
All Microsoft Phones running Windows 8 onwards can be upgraded to Lumia Denim. Nokia’s flagship Lumia 930 will be first to receive the update, with sixteen additional models following once granted carrier approval.
Microsoft’s Cortana personal assistant will be introduced to the Windows Phone range. It will also have a place on tablets and desktop PCs when Windows 10 launches near the year’s end.
Additional features include upgrades to the camera, user accounts and the ability to add a personal VPN.
Microsoft has not shared if it will announce new devices at the Mobile World Congress, which is the smartphone trade show where it is expected HTC, Sony and Samsung will reveal flagship smartphones.
“We will certainly be present [at MWC],” said Lewis. “It’s a big part of the industry and we will be there.”
