HTC sells Desire Eye exclusively at JB Hi-Fi

Goes on sale this week in Australia

The only Australian retailer to offer HTC’s Desire Eye will be JB Hi-Fi as part of an exclusive agreement between the two companies.

The ‘selfie’ phenomenon has spawned a generation of smartphones equipped with high resolution front facing cameras. Oppo unveiled a smartphone with a 16 megapixel rotating camera last month in an effort to capitalise from the trend. HTC has taken a different approach with its Desire Eye, a plastic-clad smartphone that tops its range of inexpensive smartphone.

Centred is a 13 megapixel camera — complemented by a dual-LED flash — at the front of the Desire Eye. Front on the smartphone looks like a cyclops.

Another 13 megapixel camera is fixed to its back. Distinctive to the Desire Eye is the ability to have a side-by-side view of footage being captured/recorded by both cameras.

Planting a camera at the front hasn’t prevented HTC from adding its signature Boomsound technology. Amplified stereo speakers line the front of the smartphone, albeit the grille up-top isn’t as typically wide.

Rounding off the multimedia persona is a 5.2-inch, Full HD screen.

Other specs of note include a 2.3GHz quad-core CPU, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage.

The Android smartphone is the first from HTC that can take on water. The Eye has passed IPX7 certification, which means it can be used in a metre deep freshwater for 30 minutes.

JB Hi-Fi will be the sole retailer of the Desire Eye. The smartphone will go on sale on 20 November for $799.
