Google Nexus 9 pre-sales start at $479

Nexus 9 presales kick off in Australia

A race is underway between Google and Apple. The two rivals released tablets last week and now the pressure is on to get the Nexus 9 and iPad Air 2 onto shop shelves and into the hands of customers.

Apple launched its iPad Air 2 late last week and, in classic tradition, the company plans on releasing the tablet only one week later.

Google’s Nexus 9 tablet is going to take a little longer before it’s available. Pre-orders for the tablet have gone live with the delivery time listed as two-to-three weeks.

Working in Google’s favour is the price point for the Nexus 9 as it undercuts Apple’s iPad Air 2. Whereas the introductory 16GB iPad Air 2 starts from $619, the equivalent Nexus 9 carries a price tag of $479.

The Nexus 9 is cheaper across the range, though it comes in fewer configurations than Apple’s iPad. The tablet will be offered in two colours: Lunar White and Indigo Black.

• 16GB Wi-Fi: $479
• 32GB Wi-Fi: $589
• 32GB LTE: $719

Pricing has been announced for both the Wi-Fi only and 4G models of the Nexus 9. The 4G model is listed as “coming soon” on Google’s Play store.

Google tapped HTC this time to manufacture its tablet. The 8.9in device will be the first to run Android 5.0 Lollipop and pack a 64-bit processor.

As the Maserati or BMW of laptops, it would fit perfectly in the hands of a professional needing firepower under the hood, sophistication and class on the surface, and gaming prowess (sports mode if you will) in between.

I’d recommend a Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 and the new Windows 10 to anyone who needs to get serious work done (before you kick back on your couch with your favourite Netflix show.)
