SanDisk eyes 4K video market with high-speed 512GB SD card

Announces 512GB U3-rated SD card, plus an ultrafast microSD card for more mobile devices

SanDisk today launched two new flash memory products, for which it's declaring world firsts: a 512GB U3-rated SD card, and a 64GB U3-rated microSD card. The SanDisk Extreme Pro SDXC UHS-I SD card represents the highest capacity for such a card to date, while the SanDisk Extreme Pro SDXC UHS-I microSD card is claimed to be the fastest for its size.

The new cards have been introduced to accommodate the higher capacity and speed demands of the latest cameras, action cams, smartphones and tablets, and in particular those that are capable of recording at ultra high-definition (4K) resolution. The new 512GB SD card, in particular, represents the highest capacity available for this form factor, and you will have to pay a premium for it: $1550.

It's definitely not an SD card for the casual user, but more suited to professionals who will be shooting video or fast burst rates with their high-end digital SLR. The benefits touted for the 512GB Extreme Pro SD card are an ability to shoot approximately 14 hours worth of 4K video, or 48hr of Full HD video, meaning for most jobs the user won't have to swap out the card mid-shoot for an empty one.

With a UHS-I Class 3 rating (U3), SanDisk touts a speed of 95 megabytes per second (MBps) for reading, and 90MBps for writing. Durability is another feature of the new Extreme Pro SD card, with the card claimed to be shockproof, waterproof, x-ray proof, and temperature proof.

Mainstream users of expandable phones and tablets, and action cams, haven't been forgotten either, with the 64GB Extreme Pro SDXC UHS-I microSD card, which SanDisk says is the fastest microSD card in the world. Its Class 10 and UHS-I Class 3 ratings give it the ability to transfer data at up to 95MBps. It's ideal for smartphones that can capture 4K video, as well as action cams such as the Go Pro and Contour Roam.

The 64GB Extreme Pro SDXC USH-I microSD card will set you back $179.

Both products will be available from the middle of October.

As the Maserati or BMW of laptops, it would fit perfectly in the hands of a professional needing firepower under the hood, sophistication and class on the surface, and gaming prowess (sports mode if you will) in between.
