What will Apple unveil on Sept. 9?

Post at re/code asserts, but cites no sources.

Apple will be announcing...something on Sept. 9, according to the technology news site, re/code.net. But if re/code knows what it is, it is not saying.

The brief post is distilled into a single sentence: "Apple has scheduled a big media event for Tuesday, Sept. 9 -- a date to which Apple numerologists will strain to attribute significance," writes re/code's John Paczkowski. And that's it.

One can't call this a story, let alone a post. And Paczkowski cites no sources whatsoever, even the usual vague suspects such as "people familiar with the situation." The credibility of the claim hinges entirely on Paczkowski's reputation: he's a veteran tech reporter, formerly with The Wall Street Journal's AllThingsD website. He has demonstrated that he has a lot of knowledgeable industry contacts who are willing to talk to him.

But apparently the sources didn't reveal, or know, very much about the Big Media Event on Sept. 9.

Most of the recent speculation has been that Apple will announce the 2014 iPhone models, usually called iPhone 6, sometime in September or possibly October, about 12 months after announcing the iPhone 5s and 5c. Paczkowski's post doubtless will fuel this speculation.

But Apple executives have promised that Apple will enter "new product categories" in 2014. That is generally interpreted to mean that Apple will announce entirely new products, such as an "iWatch" or other wearable device, in addition to improving existing products, such as new iPhone and iPad models. Yet so far no credible details have emerged about any of these pending announcements. The frenzy of speculation around Apple's still uncertain sapphire smartphone displays [see "Sapphire displays for iPhone 6 may be hard to come by: report"], and the possible screen sizes of new iPhone models actually highlights how little is known.
