Nokia's Lumia 635 is the only genuine rival to Motorola's Moto G

Hands-on with the bang-for-buck smartphone

Microsoft-owned Nokia will take on Motorola with the launch of its budget Lumia 635, a quad-core smartphone running Windows Phone 8.1 and armed with 4G internet speeds.

Motorola’s Moto G has gone down in the company’s history as its highest selling smartphone, but it’s hard finding an Australian Moto G in bright colours. Nokia’s Lumia 635 cashes in on this Motorola shortcoming with blindingly bright colours. And if you ever tire of one, swap the interchangeable case for another.

The 4.5in smartphone differs in many respects to the Moto G. Motorola is owned by Google and runs Android software, whereas Microsoft-owned Nokia relies on Microsoft’s Windows Phone. The Lumia 635 comes with the software company’s latest rendition, rolling off production lines with Windows Phone 8.1.

Gorilla Glass 3 coats the 480x800 resolution screen. Stretching this resolution over its 4.5in screen results in a low 207 pixel-per-inch (ppi) density. Team Motorola will be pleased by this as their Moto G, which has a 720x1280 resolution, has a superior 329ppi.

The bright Lumia is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core CPU, 512MB of RAM and has 8GB of internal storage. Nokia claims the expandable microSD slot can add more storage — 128GBs worth.

Nokia has shaved features in an effort to keep the price down. The Lumia 635 has no front facing camera, and its 5 megapixel rear camera has no flash. Videos recorded by the rear camera are captured in high definition resolution.

An area the Nokia proves superior to the Moto G is in its support of 4G internet. Motorola offers 4G speeds in its premium 4G Moto G.

Nokia’s Lumia 635 will be sold from Optus and Telstra in July for $279. The company is still offering its 3G sibling, the , for $179 from retailers Harvey Norman, JB Hi-Fi, Dick Smith and Officeworks.
