Olympus unveils new flagship toughcam and retro compact cam

Android and Apple smartphones can communicate with the cameras over Wi-Fi

Olympus has updated its range of compact and tough digital cameras by releasing new versions equipped with smartphone-friendly Wi-Fi.

The company announced the SH-1 compact camera and the TG-3 tough cam, two tough cameras built around a BSI CMOS sensor capable of capturing 16 megapixel photos.

The two new cameras can use Android and Apple smartphones as live viewfinders over Wi-Fi. Photos can be tagged with location data; the TG-3 uses its in-built GPS, while the SH-1 gleans geo-tagging information from the connected smartphone.

Olympus claims the SH-1 takes design cues from the PEN camera series, but the brushed-aluminum and the textured leatherette wrap also nod to the cameras of yesteryear.

The 16 megapixel camera features two distinct traits. The first is a 600mm telephoto lens capable of 24x optical zoom. The second is the 5-axis optical image stabilisation technology inherited from Olympus’ range-topping OMD mirrorless camera.

Up to 11.5 photos can be captured in burst mode, and the ISO ranges from ISO125 to ISO6400.

A 3in, 460k dot LCD screen is used to frame photos and videos. Videos are recorded in Full HD (1080p) resolution at 60 frames per second, but the camera can capture slow motion videos in HD by increasing the rate to 240 frames per second.

The SH-1 will be made available in silver and black as of May for a recommended retail price of $449.

The TG-3 is Olympus’ new flagship tough camera. It can withstand water 15 metres deep, drops 2.1 metres high and temperatures as cold as -10 degrees Celsius. It’s also dustproof and crushproof to 100kg.

The 16 megapixel camera offers the same ISO range as the aforementioned SH-1 at ISO125 to ISO6400, and an aperture of f/2.0.

Videos can be recorded in Full HD (1080p) resolution and, unlike the swivelled screen TG-850, are viewed on a fixed 3in, 460K dot LCD screen.

Olympus’ Stylus Tough TG-3 will be available in Black and Red from June for a recommended retail price of $499.
