Acer takes on the Nexus 7 with a cheap 7.9in tab powered by Intel

Acer will take on Asus’ Nexus 7 with the launch of the A1-830, a 7.9in Android tablet powered by Intel technology.

The new A1-830 tablet ticks all of the right boxes for people interested in a functional tablet sporting the sub 8-inch form factor. The tablet sports a 7.9-in, 1024x768 resolution screen at a 4:3 screen ratio; a ratio ideal for web browsing and reading e-books.

One thing stands out glancing over the A1-830’s spec sheet, and that is its Intel CPU. The Intel Atom Z2560 is a dual-core CPU running at 1.6GHz, but it uses hyper-threading technology to virtually map out four cores. This improves the A1-830’s multitasking capabilities.

Working alongside the CPU is 1GB of DDR2 SD RAM and 16GB of internal storage. Multimedia users will appreciate the option to expand storage by up to 32GB through the microSD memory slot, and the device’s stereo speakers.

The tablet operates on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. It also has two cameras, with a 5MP rear camera capable of full HD (1080p) video recording, and a secondary 2MP camera on its face capable of high definition (720p) video conferencing.

Then there’s the A1-830’s connectivity repertoire. It is equipped with Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, and like Asus’ Nexus 7, it doesn't support the new and improved ac standard. Where the Nexus 7 does edge ahead is with its inclusion of the latest Bluetooth 4.0 standard. In comparison, the A1-830 makes do with the now succeeded Bluetooth 3.0.

The A1-830 is available in stores now for just $249. Good Gear Guide is currently testing an A1-830 and we will articulate our findings in a review soon.

The print quality also does not disappoint, it’s clear, bold, doesn’t smudge and the text is perfectly sized.
