Getty photographers get gongs at World Press Photo

Three Aussies are among the award winners in one of the world’s most prestigious photography competitions

A number of Getty Images’ photojournalists are the big winners at the World Press Photo awards, which is one of the largest annual photography competitions in the world. Up to six photographers from Getty Images have been awarded top honours for photographs in categories ranging from general news to staged portraits.

The first-place winners were Brent Stirton for his Blind Indian albino boys Staged Portrait entry, Sara Lewkowicz for her A portrait of domestic violence Contemporary Issues entry, and Chris McGrath for his General News entry documenting Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

Ezra Shaw received a second placing in the Sports Action Stories category for America's Cup work, and Quinn Rooney received a third placing in the same category for his images of the World Swimming Championships.

Al Bello received third placing in the Sports Action, Single category for his photo of Novak Djokovic at the US Open entitled Forehand Forward

Of these photographers, three are Australian: Chris McGrath, Ezra Shaw, and Quinn Rooney.

The CEO and co-founder of Getty Images, Jonathan Klein, said in a statement that “Getty Images are proud of our colleagues and friends selected for World Press Photo honours”. He went on to say that “storytelling unites our shared humanity and is at the heart of our work at Getty Images. In this increasingly visual age, with the number of platforms for imagery growing rapidly, photojournalism is more powerful and important than ever before and we are committed to ensuring that important stories are told".
