Valentine’s Day gift guide

Here are some cool little gift suggestions and apps for Valentine's Day

Don’t know what to get your partner this Valentine’s day? Here are some suggestions to get your ball rolling.

Apple's Product Red merchandise

These are Apple products that have been given a red accessory or splash of colour. They are special products not only because your partner will love them (honestly, who wouldn’t want to receive an Apple product?), but also because money from the purchase price of these products goes towards the Global Fund to help fund AIDS programs in Africa. The products available in the Product Red line up include: iPod Touch, iPod Shuffle, and iPad Smart Case.

An engraved Apple product

While on the subject of Apple iPods and iPads, if you’re thinking about buying one, why not get it engraved with a personal message as well (up to two lines of 32 characters each). You can even ship it in a box with a red ribbon, which would put a smile on even the most hardened face. But you need to act now if you want the delivery to make it on time.

Google's red product: a Nexus 5

On the Android side of the fence, Google has a red Nexus 5 that would be perfect for Valentine's Day. It runs Android 4.4 (KitKat), and is hands-down one of the best value smartphones on the market. Order it now and it will leave the warehouse in 1-2 business days, which means it might make it to you by V Day.

Sing her (or him) a song

There is an app called LaDiDa in the App Store that’s apparently capable of ‘reverse karaoke’. It’ll make you sound good (like a professional, the app description claims), thanks to the AI that has been implemented. We’re not game to use it, but give it a go with your favourite love song and see if it gets you anywhere (it’ll cost you $2.99). Email us if you have any success.

Use apps to make food

They say the way to anyone’s heart is through delicious food, and an app called Yummly from the App Store makes the bold claim of allowing you to have “every recipe in the world in your pocket”. The question is: how good are you at following recipes? You might need to get in some practice during the week before you impress with a delicious romantic cook-up on Friday.

Select the perfect wine

While we’re on the subject of food, how about some nice wine to go along with it? Use the Delectable Wine app, which is free from the App Store. You can take a photo of a bottle of wine in a store to get reviews on that wine, helping you to make an informed product decision. Simple.

Beats headphones

Expensive headphones are always a hit on Valentine's Day, and these Beats headphones are as expensive as it gets (or you could select the classier B&W P5 Maserati headphones if your partner is a car enthusiast). The Beats are quite comfortable, they sound good, and they have splashes of red colour (or you can get them in full red, too).

UE Boom

A Bluetooth speaker is a better gift, though, mainly so that you can share your music with your partner rather than shelter yourself away in your 'phones. The Ultimate Ears Boom speaker can be used pretty much anywhere thanks to its internal battery. Bonus: it's coated in a plasma armour that makes it water and stain resistant.

GoPro Hero3+

If you and your partner are active, outdoorsy types, get a GoPro Hero3+ camera so that you can capture all of your adventures in up to 4K resolution. It's mountable, wearable and also waterproof to 40m when encased.

SimpleHuman Sensor Mirror

You probably can't get this delivered from the US in time for this Valentine's Day, but keep the SimpleHuman Sensor Mirror in mind as a gift for another time. It's basically a mirror that can automatically light up as your face approaches it. It has a tru-lux light system that simulates natural sunlight, allowing for a colour-correct view of a person's face. It also does 5x magnification for superior make-up application, allowing you to see great detail and correct any imperfections.

Fix your sleeping schedule

The LARK Un-Alarm Clock and Sleep Sensor is a silent alarm clock. It includes a sleep sensor to track your sleeping behaviours and quality of sleep. The sensor wirelessly sends your sleep patterns to your LARK Up app. It shows you how you slept, how long it took you to fall asleep ,and how many times you woke up. It is also handy for couples who have conflicting sleep schedules. It allows you to wake up silently while your partner can continue to rest. The device connects wirelessly to your device and you wear a wristband whilst sleeping. The alarm works by delivering rolling vibrations into your wrist.

Ditch regular computers, get a Chromebook

Chromebooks are a hit these days because they are low-cost, lightweight and fairly simple to use (they are based on a Web browser, after all). You just need to make sure that your partner is into the whole Google ecosystem of products; make sure they use Gmail for email and Drive for their document creation and organisation. The new HP Chromebook 11 is one of the sexier models to hit the market, with its fresh white finish and multi-colour detail on the lid. Toshiba's Chromebook is also a sexy little beast.
