Olympus will release a tough camera with a tilt screen

The Stylus TG-850 will be available from March and is the first tough camera to have a hinged screen

Olympus will upgrade its range of tough cameras by offering a model with a tilting LCD screen. In what Olympus claims as a world first feature for a tough camera, the 3in, 460k dot display on the back of the Stylus TG-850 will be able to tilt 180 degrees and offer users the ability to take easier self-portraits.

As for tough features, the Stylus TG-850 will be impervious to dust, waterproof down to 10m, shock-proof from drops of 2.1m, freeze-proof down to -10 degrees Celsius, and crush-proof up to 100kg. The camera features a double-layered construction for the body, which is what Olympus claims allows the camera to survive drops and being trampled.

Optically, the Stylus TG-850 will have a 21-105mm zoom lens, which will sit in front of a 16-megapixel CMOS sensor. It will be capable of capturing Full HD movies (at up to 60 frames per second) and slow motion movies at up to 240 frames per second.

Other shooting features will include a super macro function so that you can take photos from 10mm away from your subject, panning panorama modes, and the usual scene and art filters that Olympus is known for, many of which will also be usable in movie mode.

The camera is said to have greater low-light performance (up to ISO 6400), and it will feature Olympus’ Hybrid 5-axis movie image stabilisation technology to compensate against blurring when moving the camera.

Pricing is yet to be announced for the Stylus TG-850; Olympus has only stated that it will be available from March.

If you can afford the price tag, it is well worth the money. It out performs any other laptop I have tried for gaming, and the transportable design and incredible display also make it ideal for work.
