CES 2014: Toshiba 13.3in Chromebook

Toshiba has announced a 13.3in Chromebook that runs the latest Celeron CPU, and claims 9hr battery life

Toshiba has entered the Chromebook market with a 13.3in device that uses a latest-generation Intel Celeron processor and 2GB of RAM. The company claims that its Chromebook weighs 1.5kg, and has a maximum thickness of just over 20mm. It was announced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

Chromebooks are designed to be low-cost alternatives to regular laptops, and they don’t run Windows. Instead they run Chrome OS, in which almost all of your interactions with the system happen within a Chrome Web browser. Like all Chromebooks, Toshiba’s is specifically for those of you who already use (or plan to use) Google services for your everyday computing tasks.

Since the prime purpose of a Chromebook is to act as an interface for your Google mail, documents, and other online services, there isn’t much built-in storage for local files. You get only a 16GB solid state drive (SSD). However, external storage can be added in the form of an SD card or USB 3.0 hard drives. You also get 100GB of Google Drive space.

Other key features of the Toshiba Chromebook include a screen resolution of 1366x768, a full-sized HDMI port, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 4.0. The battery life is stated as being up to nine hours, though this will depend on how the Chromebook is being used.

No local pricing or availability details have been announced yet.
