Optus home wireless broadband trial kicks off

200 staff testing service to assess capabilities, usage scenarios, and purchasing

Telecommunications provider, Optus, is poised to begin a trial of a premium home wireless broadband product in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane which promises ADSL2+ speed to all homes and small businesses.

The three-month trial will involve around 200 Optus staff (who must live in trial areas and register to participate), and will be used to test and learn how advanced wireless broadband technology can deliver more consistent day-to-day experience, and expand customer options.

Staff will be provided with a plug-and-play modem device for the trial period to test network compatibility, user-friendliness, and performance.

The Optus Home Wireless Broadband product intends to provide a flexible option for customer who do not want or are unable to receive a fixed broadband service. As a result, customers do not need an existing phone line or installation technician.

“This… trial is about putting our powerful 4G Plus network through its paces to understand the full potential of what we can deliver for our customers, not just in mobile, but also home broadband,” Optus fixed managing director, Martin Mercer, said.

“This is not just in terms of speed and experience, but also how we manage our 4G Plus network to actively prevent a customer’s connection changing, wavering or dropping off during busy times.”

The trial will also look at how customers may use this type of broadband at home, and the manner in which they could potentially purchase it.
