Google Play gift cards now available in Australia

Google Play gift cards available through Woolworths supermarkets and Big W department stores

Google Play gift cards are now on sale through Woolworths supermarkets and Big W department stores across Australia, Ausdroid has confirmed.

Available in $20, $30, and $50 denominations, the gift cards will be exclusively sold through Woolworths and Big W stores.

The cards have a two year expiration date from the time of purchase, and can be used to buy Android apps, movies, music, books and magazines through Google's Play Store.

According to Android blog Ausdroid, the gift cards weren't officially due to go on sale until today. However, users have reportedly been able to purchase them in selected Woolworths stores since Friday, 23 August.

Despite the availability of the cards in both Woolworths and Big W stores, Google has refused to officially announce them. When contacted by Good Gear Guide the company would only respond with this generic statement.

"Google Play gift cards will soon be available in Australia. We'll have more information to share when they hit shelves.

The Google Play gift cards can be redeemed through the Play Store on a compatible smartphone or tablet, or on the Web.

Any redeemed gift cards will appear on a users' account as part of their Google Play balance.

While the gift cards can be used to purchase apps and other content, they can't ve used to buy devices from the Play Store, such as Google's Nexus branded smartphones and tablets.
