What to expect from Apple's 10 September event: iPhone 5S release, low-cost iPhone, iOS 7

Apple believed to be planning a 10 September iPhone event. Here's what to expect

If you've been patiently waiting for Apple to launch its next iPhone, you might be excited to hear that Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 5S on 10 September at a special event.

The iPhone 5 will be replaced next month.
The iPhone 5 will be replaced next month.

This weekend, All Things D reported that sources had confirmed the 10 September event, so here, we've rounded up the speculation about what we can expect from the event next month.

The iPhone 5S

Ok, so this first one is a bit obvious. Apple's 10 September iPhone event is pretty much guaranteed to bring us a brand new iPhone, and it's widely expected to be called the iPhone 5S.

On the outside, the iPhone 5S probably won't look much different to the iPhone 5, but internally, it's likely to have significant spec boosts.

We think that the iPhone 5S will have an improved camera, and it's likely to have a more powerful chip too, possibly the A7.

It's also believed that the iPhone 5S will have a fingerprint sensor built-in to the Home button, which would enable more iPhone security, ideal for mobile payments, for example.

iOS 7

It's very likely that the iPhone 5S will come with iOS 7, which means a roll out of the new mobile operating system will closely follow the iPhone 5S's unveiling.

If Apple doesn't release iOS 7 to the public on 10 September, the company will tell us when we'll be able to download iOS 7 to our devices. Owners of older iPhone, iPad and iPod touches will be able to download iOS 7, so even if you're not planning to buy a new iPhone, the 10 September event could still be an exciting one for you.

iOS 7 has been completely redesigned and there are numerous new features, so, those who install it on their older iOS device will be treated to an all-new experience when they're using their iPhone or iPad.

Low-cost iPhone (iPhone 5C?)

There has been a lot of speculation about a cheaper iPhone model, which many expect will launch alongside the iPhone 5S at the 10 September event.

This low-cost iPhone, dubbed iPhone 5C or iPhone Lite, is rumoured to have a plastic rear shell and could be available in multiple colour options. There have been numerous leaked images showing components that allegedly belong to the cheaper iPhone.

Mac OS X Mavericks

All Things D says that Apple is expected to roll out OS X Mavericks for Mac owners "in the coming weeks," but notes that it's unlikely to coincide with the launch of the iPhone 5S.

This means that the new operating system could arrive even sooner than the iPhone 5S, so we'll keep you updated about the Mac OS X Mavericks release date as soon as we find out more.

New iPads

All Things D's report makes no mention of the iPad 5 or iPad mini 2, but both of Apple's tablets are expected to get an update this year. We think that an October launch is more likely for the new iPad models.

iWatch, iTV

Apple has said that it is working on "amazing" new products in "exciting new product categories," so many believe that an iWatch and an Apple television are in the works. However, All Things D highlights that "there is no indication either of those are close to debuting."

We think that, if Apple really is working on an iWatch and iTV, we'll be more likely to see the two new products unveiled in 2014.

I've had a multifunction printer in the office going on 10 years now. It was a neat bit of kit back in the day -- print, copy, scan, fax -- when printing over WiFi felt a bit like magic. It’s seen better days though and an upgrade’s well overdue. This HP OfficeJet Pro 8730 looks like it ticks all the same boxes: print, copy, scan, and fax. (Really? Does anyone fax anything any more? I guess it's good to know the facility’s there, just in case.) Printing over WiFi is more-or- less standard these days.
