Samsung Galaxy Note III tell-all penned for September 4

A new press invite leaves little doubt that Samsung's latest phablet will be launched at IFA Berlin

Samsung's flagship Galaxy Note "phablet" is about to get another sequel. The company has announced an "Unpacked Episode 2" press event for September 4 in Berlin, just before the annual IFA electronics trade show, where it will likely announce the Galaxy Note III.

Samsung's Galaxy Note II will soon be replaced.
Samsung's Galaxy Note II will soon be replaced.

An invite sent to the press says to "Note the Date" and packs a handwritten design, leaving little mystery as to what the event will be about, especially considering that the Galaxy Note II debuted at last year's IFA show at an event dubbed "Unpacked."

Rumors about the Galaxy Note III have been somewhat shaky so far. Depending on the source, the screen size could be 5.7 inches, 5.9 inches or 6 inches. In any case, the screen will almost certainly be larger than the 5.5-inch display on the Galaxy Note II, and will get a boost in resolution from 720p to 1080p.

Other rumored specs include an octa-core processor (either Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800 or Samsung's own Exynos 5), 3 GB of RAM, at least 16 GB of storage and a 13-megapixel camera . Samsung has reportedly experimented with flexible displays, but it's unclear whether this technology will make it into the Note III.

Samsung led the way in jumbo phones with the original Galaxy Note from 2011, and the category has since attracted lots of competition. In the United States, LG's Optimus G Pro has earned nods of approval from critics, and HTC is reportedly preparing to launch a 5.9-inch HTC One Max.

The main differentiator for Samsung is its S Pen, a pressure-sensitive stylus that slides into a hole in the phone when not in use. Last year, Samsung fleshed out the stylus by adding new software features, such the ability to hover the pen over the screen to preview certain information. Expect Samsung to double down on these pen features when the Galaxy Note III debuts next month.
