Vine users on Android finally get selfie-esteem

Front-camera support comes in Vine's second Android update in a week, but is it enough to catch up to Instagram?

Vine for Android is catching up to its iOS counterpart with the addition of front-camera support. Whether the power of selfies will compel users who have decamped to Instagram to go back over to Vine remains to be seen.

Out Thursday on Google Play, version 1.2 also adds an upload manager for all those clips it just doesn't want to upload right away, as well as performance improvements, so hopefully that manager won't be needed.

Bug fixes also are included--on my Nexus 4, videos seem to be processing more quickly and playing more quickly from the feed.

This is the second update to Vine on Android in a week--the June 21 update to 1.1 added the ability to search for users and hashtags and share videos to Facebook.

That modest update, which added features that Vine users on iOS have had since February, came the day after Instagram added video. Vine sharing on Twitter plummeted 40 percent in a single day, and has continued to drop since.

Look, Ma, front camera support! Because Vine for Android needed more duckface.

But now that even Android users can start their own Gingercast, maybe Vine will stand tall once again.

MSI GS75

As the Maserati or BMW of laptops, it would fit perfectly in the hands of a professional needing firepower under the hood, sophistication and class on the surface, and gaming prowess (sports mode if you will) in between.
