How to update your iPhone or iPad to Apple iOS 7

How to download Apple's new iOS 7 operating system on to your iPad or iPhone

Want to update your iPhone or iPad with Apple's new iOS 7 operating system? Here's how.

Apple unveiled iOS 7, the latest version of its mobile operating system for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, at WWDC 2013 last night. It was introduced by Apple boss Tim Cook and Sir Jony Ive, who called iOS 7 "the biggest change to iOS since the introduction of iPhone, packed with amazing new features and a stunning new UI".

How to update an iPhone or iPad to iOS 7

The beta version of iOS 7 for the iPhone is available already, and the iPad beta will be with us in the next few weeks, but these are for app developers only.

The final version of Apple iOS 7 will be released to the general public in the Spring (southern hemisphere), and will be pushed to all iOS users at the same time: it's a free update, and you simply need to accept the update to begin downloading the new OS. But you don't have to accept the update if you don't want to - just click no.

If you then change your mind and wish to update to iOS 7 in the future (or if for some reason you aren't asked if you want to update on the morning iOS 7 launches), you can go to Settings > General > Software Update and click Install Now.

Past history suggests that accepting the update on the first day iOS 7 is available may take longer because of the heavy traffic on Apple's servers - this was a particular problem with iOS 5, but Apple's servers handled things a little better last year with iOS 6.

The importance of backing up before updating to iOS 7

Another issue when iOS 5 launched was more worrying - some users found that they were losing data (gaming high scores and the like) and in some case entire apps in the update process. Before updating you should backup your iPhone or iPad to the cloud and/or to your Mac so that you can restore your purchases and data if something goes wrong.
