Supersized and super powerful LG Optimus G Pro unveiled

If the 'phablet' is really a category, then the Optimus G Pro will be at the top of it.

Last night in New York, LG unveiled their new monster LG Optimus G Pro. The 5.5-inch monster with a 1920 x 1080 Full HD IPS display will be launching on AT&T on May 10 and will be available for $199, with pre-orders will begin May 3.

If the "Phablet" is really going to become a mobile category, then the Optimus G Pro--from a purely spec vantage point--blows all the competition out of the water.

The Jelly Bean-powered phone runs on a Snapdragon 600 1.7 Ghz quad core processor (the same engine in the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the latest HTC One). It also boasts a 13 MP front-facing camera, 32 GB of standard memory, and 2 GB of RAM.

A brief hands-on revealed a supercharged handset that nimbly switched between screens and functions. The Pro's supersized screen and volcanic innards allows for some of the most versatile multi-app management I've seen on a mobile device. The new incarnation of the proprietary QSlide tech allows multi-media apps (including running video) to be treated like a PC window that can be stretched, moved, and made more or less transparent allowing for a versatile mobile work environment.

On a side note, as powerful as the Snapdragon 600 has demonstrated to be, we may be in for a whole new world of mobile brawniness when the Snapdragon 800s make their way into consumer tech by the second half of this year. A Qualcomm rep told me that the next gen processor may offer a 20-30% boost in CPU and a 50% boost in GPU power.

As consumers decide if they want this mid-size phone/tablet thing, the bleeding edge Optimus G Pro--which will be available at a very phone-like price--will be at the forefront.
