Find My Car: Bond-esque Apple patent allows car to be controlled with iPhone

New patent applications offer the means of tracking down and controlling your car, via iPhone

In the future, you may never your vehicle in a car park again thanks to a new Apple patent application called "Method for locating a vehicle," published by the U.S. Trade and Patent Office.

The patent describes technology that would allow you to track down your car via a Bluetooth connection, pinpointing its exact location. In a similar manner to how Maps directs you to a location using GPS, the iPhone would lead you to your car's location.

As well as this, Apple has published another patent application called "Accessing a vehicle using portable devices," which looks at helping you unlock the door of your car using your iPhone - brilliant if you're as forgetful as the rest of us.

The applications would also allow the iPhone to manipulate your car in other ways, such as starting the engine, turning the radio on, opening the sunroof, activating the headlights and adjusting the seats.

According to the applications: "The vehicle-related operation can include a personalisation operation, in which the vehicle automatically adjusts an environmental setting (e.g., seat position, mirror position, temperature controls, settings for an audio or audiovisual entertainment system) based on the received vehicle access credential and/or on the particular portable device from which the vehicle access credential is received."

Jargon translated: If you share your car with a friend or partner, it will adjust itself according to specifications stored on your iPhone!

Unfortunately, there's nothing in the description that talks of revealing a secret bottle of champagne, or throwing you're pursuant off with oil or heavy smoke. But, on the bright side, at least you'll never lose your car, or have to worry about faffing about with the entertainment system again.

If you can't wait for these technologies to be put to use, then you could always take a look at Volkswagen's latest attempt at such a concept.
