Asus Transformer Pad 300 gets Android 4.2 Jelly Bean

Transformer Pad 300 is first non-Nexus tablet to get Android 4.2 Jelly Bean

Asus has started rolling out an update to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean for its Transformer Pad TF300 tablet.

The software update means that the Transformer Pad 300 is the first tablet to get Android 4.2 Jelly Bean aside from Google's Nexus 7 and Nexus 10. Asus is rolling the firmware out in the US from today and other regions during March. See also: Group test: what's the best Android tablet?

Asus said: "This new version of Android enhances performance and stability, improves the user experience with new features as well as providing multiple user account logins."

Although there are plenty of higher end tablets in the Transformer Pad range, Asus appears to have picked the 300 model to get 4.2 Jelly first because of its popularity. "The Asus Transformer Pad TF300 is one of the most successful ASUS tablets to date and offers a full notebook PC experience when attached to the innovative mobile dock." said the firm.

Asus said the Transformer Pad Infinity, Memo Pad Smart 10in and Memo Pad will all be updated to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean during the second quarter of the year. Across the entire range users will be able to update over the air (OTA).

The firm said: "Asus is committed to providing the best customer experience, and is the first manufacturer to receive Android 4.2 for partnered tablets."

As well as improved performance (via Project Butter) and multiple use accounts, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean brings features such as expandable notifications and widgets on the lock screen.

We're keeping an eye out for announcements from other vendors such as Samsung, Toshiba, Lenovo, Archos, Acer and Sony around updates to 4.2 Jelly Bean so stay tuned.
