Apple working on USB 3.0 support for iOS Lightning connector?

A new job listing hints that Apple is planning on offering full USB 3.0 support for its iOS devices

Apple's new Lightning connector currently doesn't transfer data at USB 3.0 speeds, despite the belief that it is able to support it. A new listing on Apple's Jobs site suggests that the company is working to bring full USB 3.0 support for its iOS devices soon.

The listing, posted on 15 February, reveals that Apple is seeking a Senior Software Quality Engineer to join the USB Connectivity Compliance team to help lead testing efforts on iOS and iPod product lines.

The successful candidate will have knowledge of high-speed bus device testing USB 2.0 and USB 3.0, and will have understanding of USB interconnect at both hardware and software levels.

Among the new employee's responsibilities will be the task of working alongside hardware and software development teams on new products and product launches, as well as existing issues.

Apple's newest iMacs and MacBooks feature USB 3 ports, so it seems likely that the company is considering brining the faster transfer speeds to its mobile devices in the near future.

Last week, Apple launched a shorter Lightning to USB cable, alongside a minor update to its In-Ear Headphones.

This week, a separate job listing on Apple's Jobs site added evidence to the speculation that the company is planning to launch a more advanced version of its Apple TV set-top box, as it revealed that the company is seeking a Software Engineering Manager to "help bring the Apple experience to the Living Room."
