Smartphone users are consistently consuming more mobile data than tablet users

Smartphone users are consistently consuming more mobile data than tablet users, according to the "Smartphones Trump Tablets: Recent Trends in Extreme Data" report from Arieso.

The iPhone 5 users want four times as much data as iPhone 3G users and 50 percent more than iPhone 4S users.

In contrast, Samsung Galaxy S III users generate about four times the amount of data of iPhone 3G users.

The tablet market is rapidly growing and findings of the report show that Samsung Tab 2 10.1 users demand 20 percent more data than iPad users.

Arieso's report shows the latest trends in mobile data usage and the current challenges faced by the operators.

"Yet again we found that novel usage patterns, new technologies and regional idiosyncrasies are conspiring to make life increasingly difficult for mobile operators trying to meet evolving customer expectations," said study author and Arieso CTO, Dr. Michael Flanagan. "The ability to conduct detailed analysis such as this is critical in giving operators a rich source of intelligence to help boost network performance and enrich user experience."

Thirst for mobile data

Smartphone users demand more mobile data as compared to tablet users and people who use more content are beginning to move to new LTE networks.

Arieso's last year's survey indicates that about one percent of users consume 50 percent of the downlink data on 3G/UMTS networks. However, the latest survey shows that the most demanding one percent of users consume 40 percent.

Although LTE provides users with more bandwidth and relieves pressure on UMTS networks, Arieso advises operators to maintain their focus on network planning, optimisation and performance as LTE technology is not enough to solve the data problem.

Operators should use a different approach to network design to address the needs and expectations of LTE customers and extreme users.

Many operators in the Asia Pacific region are very familiar with the demands of mobile data consumers and LTE networks but they will find it difficult to sustain long term data growth projections.

"Every year, the situation gets tougher and more complicated. But it is worth remembering two salient points. One, that these challenges only result from our industry's incredible success in creating devices, services and networks that billions of people want to use every hour of every day," added Flanagan. "Two, that these puzzles are surmountable through careful attention to the needs of subscribers where they demand services from the network."
