Samsung files lawsuit against iPhone 5

Adds iPhone 5 to list of devices infringing Samsung patents

Samsung is accusing Apple's iPhone 5 of infringing its patents and may look to ban the smartphone.

The Galaxy S3 smartphone maker has added the iPhone 5 to the list of devices which supposedly infringe its wireless patents, according to the FT. Samsung showed its intention to do so shortly after Apple announced the iPhone 5 last month.

"A person close to Samsung said that it could not rule out pushing for a sales ban on the new iPhone, although it was not clear when its complaint would be heard in court." said the FT.

The news came after the same US court lifted a ban on Samsung's Galaxy 10.1 tablet which Apple won in June. Samsung claims that it is forced into taking these measures because of Apple's actions.

Samsung said: "We have always preferred to compete in the marketplace with our innovative products, rather than in courtrooms. However, Apple continues to take aggressive legal measures that will limit market competition. Under these circumstances, we have little choice but to take the steps necessary to protect our innovations and intellectual property rights."

Apple is rumoured to reveal a smaller version of the iPad called the iPad Mini which would rival tablets such as Samsung's Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0).
