Leaked Sony RX1: full-frame sensor in a compact camera

24mp full-frame Sensor, 35mm f/2.0 prime lens in NEX-style body

Camera blog Sony Alpha Rumors has what it says are leaked pictures of a new camera that promises to shake up both the compact and DSLR camera markets: a new Sony RX1, fitting a full-frame imaging sensor into a body not much larger than the compact NEX series.

The blog suggests the RX1 will have the same sensor as the also-leaked A99, which is Sony's next pro-grade DSLR: it's a 24-megapixel sensor, in the 36mm x 24mm size that's popularly used in high-end professional digital SLRs like the Canon 5D Mark III and the Nikon D800

The new camera doesn't look to be an interchangeable lens one, which would save Sony from having to design an entirely new line of camera lenses. It's got a fixed-focal-length 35mm lens — a versatile range — with a reasonably fast f/2.0 maximum aperture.

If it's real, RX1 will likely be somewhat larger than the popular NEX series it shares its form factor with — the physically larger sensor necessitates a larger lens design — but it looks to have a similar control layout to the recently-released RX100.

Sony Alpha Rumors has pegged the RX1's price at US$2799, and says there'll be plenty of add-on accessories like optical and electronic viewfinders. If it's released locally we'll probably see the price increase by around $1000.

The most recent camera with a design similar to the RX1 &8212; flat body, and a fast prime lens line-up — is the Fuji X-Pro1. The last 24mp full-frame Sony sensor we saw was in the excellent, class-leading Nikon D3x professional DSLR.

We'll hear more about the Sony RX1 if and when it's announced at Photokina next week, alongside other Sony digital cameras.
