Facebook hires ex-Apple staff to work on iPhone app overhaul

The new Facebook app could arrive next year, followed by a Facebook smartphone

Facebook is reportedly rebuilding its iPhone app, and has employed former Apple engineers to help with the process.

Bloomberg reports that "people with knowledge of the matter" have revealed a team of former Apple staff have been hired by Facebook to work on its app.

This team includes Mike Matas and Kimon Tsinteris, both designers who helped design user interfaces and artwork for the iPhone, iPad and Mac. The pair are the founders of digital publishing company Push Pop Press, which was acquired by Facebook in 2011. Matas is also credited on several of Apple's patents, including the battery logo seen when charging an iPhone.

Also in the team are Greg Novick, Tim Omernick, Chris Trembla and Scott Goodson, who have all worked on Apple's iOS.

"The team from Apple has been primarily focused on rebuilding Facebook's iPhone application, which has been criticized by users for being slow," reads Bloomberg's report. "An initial release could be announced within a couple of months, with another broader overhaul of the iPhone app coming next year, one person said."

Facebook has also hired former user interface design manager from Apple Chris Weeldreyer, and several other former Apple engineers, who are thought to be working on the a Facebook phone, which is now expected to launch in 2013.
