A worldwide recall of Lenovo ThinkCentre all-in-one PCs has reached Australia, with buyers of the ThinkCentre M90z advised to immediately unplug their computers due to a potential fire risk.
160,000 computers worldwide are potentially at risk according to Lenovo, with both ThinkCentre M70z and M90z all-in-one PCs affected by the recall. Only the ThinkCentre M90z was sold in Australia between May 2010 and January 2012, and was available through retail stores, distributors and directly from Lenovo. The PC is aimed primarily at enterprise and small business users.
The ACCC’s Product Safety Recalls Web page for the recall says that capacitors inside the power supplies may be defective, leading to possible overheating and smoke with a potential fire hazard. According to Lenovo US, there has only been one incident where a ThinkCentre M90z has caught fire, and another incident where a system has emitted smoke.
Any customer in Australia who has purchased a ThinkCentre M90z is advised to contact Lenovo on 131 426 or visit lenovo.com/aiopsurecall and enter their system’s serial number to see whether it is affected. Full instructions are available on the Lenovo Web site.
Any systems affected will have their power supplies replaced by Lenovo technicians, with customers able to schedule an on-site service appointment free of charge.
The ThinkCentre M90z is still on sale in Lenovo Australia’s online store for between $999 and $1399 before discounts.
