Wyse Technology's latest thin client, the T10, uses an ARM-based processor, which helps keep both cost and temperature down, the company said on Tuesday at the Cebit conference.
Using an ARM-based processor in a thin client comes with several advantages, according to Thomas Möllerbernd, a system engineer with Wyse.
For example, ARM-based processors are very power efficient, which means it is easier to keep the client cool and it also becomes possible to build very small units, Möllerbernd said, and added that the processors are also quite cheap, which helps keep the cost of the product down.
The processor used by the T10 is made by Marvell and runs at 1GHz.
The T10 uses Wyse's own OS, ThinOS, which takes up just 4.5MB and has been tailored for use on thin clients. The small size results in a quicker start and a reinstall or an upgrade of the OS can be done in less than 30 seconds.
The client can be used with a number of different platforms for virtualized desktops, including those from Citrix, Microsoft and VMware, according to Möllerbernd.
On the show floor, Wyse demonstrated the T10 using two monitors in an L-shaped configuration (one monitor in landscape and one in portrait). The two monitors can each have a resolution of 1920-by-1080 pixels. When attaching only one monitor to the T10, the resolution goes up to 1920-by-1200 pixels.
The T10 is shipping and costs about €300 (US$396), according to a spokeswoman at Wyse.
