Google Zeitgeist 2011: Australia loves iPhones, Adele, planking and Minecraft

What is loved? Google's yearly Australian and global search results revealed

Google has released its Zeitgeist 2011 lists, with information on what interested Australians most in the last 12 months. Australia's fastest rising searches included the iPhone 5 — beating out the real thing, the iPhone 4S — indie 'blockbuster' video game Minecraft and songstress Adele.

Google Zeitgeist data for 2011 for Australia and globally can be found on the Google Zeitgeist Web site. Australia's fastest rising searches range from technology to world and local news, sport, and celebrities. The latest iPhone features twice at #1 and #9 under different names, and indie open-world video game Minecraft enjoyed a consistent increase in search traffic throughout the year. Other trends include the disaster caused by Australian Cyclone Yasi, the dreaded phenomenon of planking, and Chris Lilley's controversial Angry Boys series on the ABC:

Australia: Fastest Rising Searches

  1. 1. Iphone 5
  2. 2. Minecraft
  3. 3. Cyclone Yasi
  4. 4. Planking
  5. 5. Adele
  6. 6. Angry Boys
  7. 7. Royal Wedding
  8. 8. Rugby World Cup
  9. 9. Iphone 4s
  10. 10. Rebecca Black

Female singers topped the list of Australia's most-searched-for people, for different reasons. Adele was #1, fairly won for her series of popular music tracks, but #2 Rebecca Black's place came on the back of her much-debated and generally-hated Friday. Crooner Amy Winehouse hit #3 on the list with her death in July. Apple's Steve Jobs was fourth most popular, and the racing death of MotoGP rider Marco Simoncelli made him the fifth most searched person. Jackie Chan was a surprise entry in this top ten, thanks to untimely reports of his death on social media sites in March. Interestingly, no Australians made the list.

Australia: Fastest Rising People

  1. 1. Adele
  2. 2. Rebecca Black
  3. 3. Amy Winehouse
  4. 4. Steve Jobs
  5. 5. Marco Simoncelli
  6. 6. Nicki Minaj
  7. 7. Selena Gomez
  8. 8. Jackie Chan
  9. 9. Chris Brown
  10. 10. Michelle Bridges

A pressing musical-cum-philosophical question were answered with the top 'What Is...' question asked to Google: What is love? Australian charts for other Zeitgeist categories are not as interesting or as varied as the Fastest Rising lists, seemingly due to no specific local data being made available — for example, while it is clear that the AFL was the most-searched sport, the yearly chart shows no rises or drops in search volume.

Top Australian Searches

  • Sport: AFL
  • News: YouTube
  • Images: Justin Bieber
  • Movies: Twilight: Breaking Dawn
  • Food and Drink: Red velvet cupcakes

The full list of Australian charts and results can be seen on the Google Zeitgeist 2011 Web page.
