Apple sets Oct. 4 date to 'talk iPhone'

It's just like Apple to pour rain on Amazon's new Kindle Fire by setting a press event for the new iPhone next week.

Although there had been wide speculation among tech bloggers that Apple would trot out its new iPhone next week, the company made it official today by sending out press invitations for Oct. 4 that read, "Let's talk iPhone." Presumably Apple will use the event to answer all of the burning questions that iPhone fans have about the new device, such as whether it will be available on the Sprint network and whether it will have some kind of 4G connectivity. Network World's John Cox has provided weekly roundups of all new iPhone rumors for the past several months.

BACKGROUND: iPhone 5 rumor roll up for the week ending September 24

The newest version of the iPhone, popularly called the "iPhone 5" in the press, will be the first iPhone unveiled by the company since Steve Jobs' resignation as Apple CEO this past summer. While new Apple CEO Tim Cook is expected to host next week's iPhone event, there has been speculation that Jobs could make an appearance in some capacity. The event will take place at Apple's Cupertino, Calif., campus starting at 10 a.m. Pacific Time.

Apple's iPhone announcement is sure to suck at least some air out of the hype being generated by Amazon's new Kindle Fire tablet that is slated to be unveiled tomorrow and has been hailed by analysts as the first Android-based tablet that can provide real competition to Apple's iPad. The new tablet is rumored to be priced in the $250 range and is expected to make extensive use of Amazon's cloud services and applications.
