Apple retaliates with suit against Samsung in the UK

Apple did not explain the purpose of the lawsuit

Apple confirmed on Thursday that it filed a lawsuit against Samsung in the U.K.'s High Court earlier in the week, as the two technology giants continue a legal tit-for-tat revolving around their mobile phone and tablet products.

Apple did not reveal any further information on the lawsuit. In June, Samsung filed a lawsuit against Apple in the High Court's Court of Chancery, alleging Apple "violated our patented wireless technology inventions," according to a Samsung statement.

The Korean company confirmed on Wednesday that it had also filed suit in a French court on July 8 accusing Apple of patent infringement, opening a new front in the companies' war over intellectual property. The three patents cover 3G technology, and alleged infringing products are the iPhone and the 3G versions of the iPad and iPad 2, the company confirmed.

The two companies are engaged in legal battles around the world. On Sept. 9, Apple won a permanent ban on German sales of Samsung tablet after a district court in Düsseldorf found that Galaxy Tab 10.1 is too similar to Apple's iPad 2.

Samsung said it would appeal the ruling. The company also argued that the German ruling was inconsistent with an Aug. 24 ruling by a Dutch court, which did not find Galaxy range of products were too similar to Apple's products.
