Toshiba takes on Apple with slim tablet, light ultrabook

The company will start shipping the products in the fourth quarter

Toshiba is hoping to improve its fortunes in the tablet market with the Android Honeycomb-based AT200, which is only 7.7 millimeters thick. It is also getting onboard Intel's Ultrabook push with the Portégé Z830.

New tablets continue to dominate proceedings at the IFA consumer electronics show, and following announcements from Sony and Samsung, Toshiba joined in with its AT200.

The tablet has a 10.1-inch display with a 1280-by-800 pixel resolution and is powered by a dual-core 1.2GHz processor.

But what Toshiba hopes will set it apart from the competition, headed by Apple and its iPad2, is the size. At 7.7 millimeters (0.3 inches) thick, the tablet is thinner than both the iPad2 at 8.8 millimeters and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 at 8.6 millimeters. The device weighs 558 grams (1.2 pounds).

The AT200 also offers a wealth of connectivity, including micro-HDMI and micro-USB ports. It connects to the Internet using Wi-Fi and there is a microSD card slot, according to Toshiba.

Toshiba may be pushing tablets, but hasn't forgotten about laptops. The company's addition to Intel's ultrabook segment is the Portégé Z830, which has a 13.3-inch HD LED screen, weighs 1.12 kilograms and is 15.9 millimeters thick.

Data is stored on the device's 128GB solid state drive for better performance and energy efficiency, according to Toshiba.

The keyboard is backlit and spill-resistant, which is good for those who can't keep track of their water bottles. Again, there are a lot of ports, including ones for HDMI, USB 3.0 and gigabit ethernet.

Both the tablet and the ultrabook will start shipping during the fourth quarter, according to Toshiba, but the company didn't announce any pricing
